The great Mayan culture had a remarkable number system that dates from the 4th century, and gave them an outstanding way of counting without needing to know how to read or write. Some believe the Mayan culture was 1,000 years more advanced than the Europeans at that time, making them geniuses in calendars, astronomy and architecture of which grand examples can be observed in Chichen Itza.

The ancient Mayan priests came up with a system of enumeration based on the position of values and the use of the mathematical concept of the “zero”, one of the greatest mathematical advancements in history. The number system of the Mayan culture was based on 20, which is the total number of digits on human’s hands and feet, or simply the double of our own decimal counting system (10). This 20-based system helped them use bigger and longer numbers that we use.

The Mayas use to count by dots and lines. The zero was represented by a shell, and the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 were made out by dots depending on the amount; 1 (one dot), 2 (two dots) until reaching number 5, which changes into one line. Dots would be made out of pebbles, and lines out of short sticks.

Number 6 is one dot plus a line underneath; number 7 is 2 dots plus a line; number 8 is 3 dots plus a line; and number 9 is 4 dots plus a line. Number 10 was made out of two lines, and 20 instead of being 4 lines was the starting point of a new count above the first one. Like zero is a shell, number 20 is a single dot above a shell and the following numbers continue from the bottom to top in two rows vertically.

Travel Tip: If you head to the Mayan archaeological sites in your next Cancun vacation or to the Riviera Maya don´t miss the symbols and hieroglyphs inscripted on the temples.

The Riviera Maya hotel occupancy rate had a high rise in amount of visitors that went from an average 35- 37 to 50 percent.

The director of Tourism of the municipality informed that the hotel occupancy registered a 50.6 percent rate that may also rise this summer up to 70 or 80 percent. He also added that last Friday on June 26th, Playa del Carmen closed with a 52 percent rate, and the Small Hotels with 42.5 percent.

The occupancy rate in the Riviera Maya from June 1 to 26 was an average of 38.7 percent which only marked a difference in Playacar with a high average of 48.3 percent.

The government official also added that the promotional packages that were included in the “Viva Playa” campaign offering discounts of almost 20 percent off will end this month.

By another hand, the government official informed that Carnival cruises announced that the cruise that would arrive in Playa del Carmen, the Holiday, with a total capacity of one thousand seven hundred passengers plus crew, will be a no-show because it will be under a maintenance program.

But in its place, the company will send Fantasy, a bigger cruise ship of almost 70 thousand tons and with a capacity of two thousand seven hundred passengers plus crew, and will arrive every three weeks days more often than the Holiday cruise ship use to which is expected to attract a greater amount of tourists to the destination.

Mexico’s President Calderón announced on World Environment Day (WED) at Xcaret eco-park in Mexico just outside Cancun that he plans to combat climate change alongside the establishment of new protected areas.

In a wide ranging speech, flanked by several key ministers including those from finance and the environment, the Mexican president said the country would voluntarily cut global warming gases by 50 million tons a year.

The announcement came as thousands of people around the planet celebrated World Environment Day, from remote villages to sprawling capitals. On every continent, children, companies, mayors and heads of state came together to unite to combat climate change under the banner of the UN event, heeding Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s call that Your Planet Needs You.

President Calderón said Mexico – the host of the main WED ’09 celebrations – would double this cut under its new Special Programme for Climate Change if the right kind of financing arrangements are in place—by some estimates the announcement equates to an eight per cent to 16 per cent reduction in the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), said people from over 100 countries around the world were today sending a clear signal to their politicians and world leaders that action was urgently needed—Mexico had heard and responded to that call.

“The challenge in Copenhagen is to bring over 190 countries, at different points in their development together in common cause where each understands they are gaining rather than losing by combating climate change,” said Mr Steiner.

On June 5th, President Calderón underlined Mexico’s rapidly evolving leadership on climate change—its determination too to be part of the solution despite the country having no formal, legally-binding commitments under the Kyoto Protocol,” he added.

The Mexican leader, speaking in the theme park of Xcaret on the site of a Mayan settlement, said that climate change was among his top priorities as it represented a “true danger to humanity”. He also announced five new protected areas including a biosphere for the whale shark in Quintana Roo.

Later in the day Mr Steiner was among guests taking part in a Mayan ‘Healing of the Earth’ ceremony held in the ancient Mayan tongue.

Shamans conducted the healing while drummers and players of haunting wood instruments looked on with costumed, body-painted symbols of Mayan spirits in attendance. The ceremony ended with a traditional corn-based drink, designed to cure the earth of ills made with ingredients of honey and cinnamon.
