Where has the beach gone?! Many people are noticing the receding beaches in Cancun and the Mayan Riviera, but what most people don’t know is that this is a natural occurrence and is easily corrected!
On the every beach just like the beaches in Cancun, the waves take sand and then bring new sand, but this can happen in stages. Bringing more sometimes and then taking more other times, but this can sometimes take years. Storms and hurricane can make this process much worse causing the erosion that we see today. Katrina and Wilma were devastating for the Cancun and Mayan Riviera coastline, ripping away up to fifteen of coastline and beach in some places!
So to combat this, Cancun officials decided to take matters into their own hands rather than waiting for mother nature to do her work. Using a process called Beach Nourishment, the Cancun officials decided to bring sand from places where there is more than enough to sustain natural balance and bring where it is needed most. Through this process the beaches in Cancun will continue to be as beautiful as you can expect!
Many people may worry about the environmental problems that may be associated with this process, but in Cancun they have chosen ways that least effect the natural wildlife. Sand would never be taken or replaced in areas where sea turtles nest because the new or removed sand would make it difficult for the turtle to nest. In fact, on many beaches in Cancun you can see the designated areas where turtle eggs have been moved to be protected until ready to hatch and then the turtles are “escorted” to the sea to give them the absolute best chances of survival.
Tactics like this and many others used by the people of Cancun ensure that the native wildlife is protected as best as possible while still making the area enjoyable for the two-legged creatures of this world!
Beach nourishment is an excellent way to restore the natural beauty that Cancun and the Mayan Riviera are known for. So if you’re wondering if there will be any beach left when you arrive in Cancun, don’t worry! There is plenty of white sand waiting for you along the Cancun coastline!
