Part of traveling to new places is trying new things and Cancun is full of new and different things for you to try!   Now that you have had some of the local cuisine, its time for dessert!   Cancun has a unique blend of flavors from the Mayans to the Europeans and it is definitely reflected in the candies that you will find here in Cancun, but the candies in Cancun are much different from candies that you may be used to.   So here are a few things to keep your eye out for when you are adventuring in Cancun!

1.    Coconut Candies – Many candies are made from coconut in Cancun.   Coconut candies are some of the best candies you can find here and are also very natural.   Coconut candies come in many different varieties and even flavors.   The trick part is that these candies are commonly called different names depending on where you go, but they will usually look the same from place to place.   Try a few different kinds to see which you like!

2.    Marshmallows - Marshmallows are very popular in Cancun.   You can find many different sweet treats and candies made with marshmallows.   Try Payaso pops or Sponch! Cookies.   Both are made mostly with marshmallows, but are very tasty.

3.    Ate – Ate is an unusual kind of candy.   It is made with the pulps of different fruits and sugar.   It is boiled and then set into a very firm type of jam.   It is typically eaten by itself and is very sweet, but it is made from all natural ingredients and is very unique to Cancun and the Yucatan peninsula.

4.    Marquesitas – Marquesitas actually don’t look like candies at all!   Marquesitas are large round disks made from dough that is similar to a waffle cone.   It is very sweet, but very delicious and very big! One would be enough for two or three people.   You can usually find street vendors selling them along the streets in Cancun.

5.    Palenquetas – Palenquetas are a very healthy and unique candy in Cancun.   Palenquetas are small disks made of many different things.   You can find sesame seeds, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and many other varieties.   Palenquetas can be made with different ingredients, but they all made with honey.   Honey is the only sweetener used and it is an all natural sugar!

There are many things to try in Cancun and never enough time!  But keep your eye out for these items and you will surely find one or two favorites to take back with you until your next Cancun vacation!
