For next Christmas season, Michigan residents will be able to hop on a direct flight to Cancun, Mexico from Lansing Capital Region International Airport starting in late December.

It will be the Lansing airport’s first direct international flight since the U.S. Customs and Border Protection station opened at the airport in May.

The first flight to Cancun will leave Dec. 27. Flights will depart and return on Sunday afternoons. Passengers will fly on 150-seat Airbus A320 jets.

“We’re hoping in addition to Cancun, we’ll be able to talk to carriers about providing international service to the Bahamas, Punta Cana in Dominican Republic and Aruba,” said an executive director of the Capital Region Airport Authority, which runs the airport.

“Initially, the international destinations are leisure destinations. That seems to be the interest of the tour operators is getting people into the warmer climate from the north lands.”

In addition, just days ago the Municipality of Benito JuarezĀ inĀ Cancun has announced an agreement for a direct flight from the Texan cities Mission and Pharr.

Even though these cities have less than 100 thousand inhabitants each, this direct flight will allow Texan residents to travel to Cancun without having to make stops in Monterrey and Houston.

Municipality authorities have asked to offer the mayors of these cities a special acknowledgment as distinguished guests of Cancun, upon arrival.
