Thanks to a great effort in protecting and monitoring the Costa Occidental of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc National Park in Cancun which is home to endless species of tropical wildlife, these rich ecosystems in Quintana Roo have been able to maintain their natural resources intact apart from the fact that they are visited by almost 800 thousand visitors a year.

The Costa Occidental of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc National Park in Cancun is one of the treasures of this vacation destination which can be visited through many tours and activities such as boat expeditions, snorkeling trips, jungle tours and scuba diving charters. It has an extension of 8 thousand 673 hectares including mangrove vegetation in Cancun and Isla Mujeres, and was officially established as a marine protected area in July 19th, 1996.

The Costa Occidental of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc National Park´s director recently said that some of the measures that have been imposed to protect Cancun´s marine sanctuary during these last 13 years include environmental friendly actions such as the prohibition of fishing activities, and a limited number of visitors to the area in order to avoid an excessive amount of tours and products that may damage the coral reefs such as suntan lotions and noise from the boat motors that have a great impact in the marine fauna.

Travel Tip: In your next Cancun vacation, you will be asked to pay an extra fee from the normal cost of some water activities and tours, known as “admission to the National Marine Park”.
