Around 15 thousand Cancun hotel rooms will turn off their lights for one hour Saturday night, on March 27, 2010 in support of Earth Hour movement, to demonstrate symbolically – but powerful – that governments, private companies and citizens must work together to control climate change.

This is a worldwide event and it will be in Mexico from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Cozumel and the Riviera Maya will join more than one billion people among companies, governments and citizens in more than six thousand cities in 100 countries worldwide, where lights will be off in symbols and famous monuments like the Eiffel Tower, the Roman Coliseum and the bridge of Brooklyn to demand actions that reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

Cancun now has the support of the Cancun Hotel Association, Xcaret Park, Xel Ha Park, Fairmont Mayakoba, El Camaleon Mayakoba, Universidad Anahuac Cancun, the Office of the Cancun Convention and Visitors and Forum by the Sea

Besides the event in Plaza Forum by the Sea, host this important event, WWF organized a Forum on Climate Change and Tourism, on 23 March, starting at 5 pm at the Universidad Anahuac Cancun, where company representatives, higher education institutions and municipal, state and federal officials will discuss issues and actions that each is taking in relation to climate change in their various fields of competence.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement that emerged in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, as an awareness campaign about the imminent climate change, involving 2.2 million people. In 2008 involved 100 million people in 371 cities in 35 countries. In 2009 were four thousand and 159 cities in 88 countries which the lights of landmark buildings and monuments.

This initiative is promoted annually by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), with the intention of getting the world´s attention and raise awareness about the devastating effects of climate change.

Earth Hour will be linked to the Sixteenth United Nations Conference on Climate Change to be held in Cancun, Mexico from 29 November to 10 December this year, the most important summit on the topic, which attracts the world´s attention to our country and the actions already carried out, with a view to lay concrete foundations to address one of the most urgent challenges that humanity and ecosystems are facing.
