While you are on vacation in Cancun, you may consider renting a car for the duration of your stay. Most of the training that you have had at home will keep you safe while out on the streets of Cancun, but here are few things you may want to look out for while you are here. The streets and the laws in Cancun are much different from the US and can be quite a surprise if you aren’t aware of it before you hit the streets.
Make sure you have proper insurance. Most American insurance companies will cover your time driving in Cancun while on vacation. Speak to your insurance provider about coverage, rates and claim processes before you leave. But if you rather, you can always see about getting Mexican insurance through the rental company.
Be aware of road conditions. Most of Cancun is in very good condition, but in some places, the roads are in poor condition. Be aware of where you are going and make sure you are aware of the possible hazards on the roads. Also, if you venture out of Cancun city limits, make sure you keep an eye out for livestock and on the highways; there are stops and speed bumps placed in areas where there is foot traffic.
Watch other drivers. The requirements for a road safe vehicle are different in Cancun and some vehicles may not have proper lights. Watch out for different colored break lights or no break lights at all. Some drivers may neglect to use a turning signal. So keep a safe distance while driving in Cancun.
Know the right of way. In Cancun, it can be difficult to determine who has the right of way. Just always assume that the larger vehicle has right of way. While driving in Cancun, you will notice that many of the areas in which you are meant to make a left hand turn can be confusing, but be careful about other cars and you should be fine.
Driving in Cancun can be an adventure of its own, but can also be fun and educational. Driving in Cancun can add a lot of freedom to your Cancun vacation and give you a chance to see parts of the city that you wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to see, so take a chance, but remember you basic safety!
