Traveling in Cancun is typically very safe, but travelers should always be cautious, just in case.   Although most people in Cancun are genuinely friendly, there are some that aren’t quite so honest.   To help you hold onto your money and possessions and keep the thieves away, here are a few more tips to keep your money safe throughout your Cancun vacation.

                8.   Pretend.   Thieves and pick-pockets will often look around for people that seem like they are lost or people that look like they don’t know where they are going.   Pretend that you do!   Acting like you know exactly where you are going can help you blend into a crowd and prevent you from standing out.   Cancun in a fairly big city and it is easy to get lost if you don’t know where you are, but keep a map handy and get a sense of your route before you leave your hotel.

            9.   Assume the worst.   If a dark alley looks like a bad place to be, then just assume that it is a bad place to be.   Most of us tend to give everyone and everything the benefit of doubt, but when you are traveling, it is best to assume the worst.   We have all heard the old saying, ‘better safe than sorry’ and that it just as true here in Cancun as it is everywhere else.   Thieves and pick pockets are opportunists.  So don’t give them the opportunity.

            10.   Make a scene!   If you find yourself in a bad situation regardless of the steps you have taken, then your best bet to get away from the encounter with your money and self intact, is to make a scene.   Scream, shout, and wave your arms like a madman!   If you notice that someone is coming at you with clear intentions to rob you, then yelling something like ‘GEERTUGAHATWE MUHAHAHA!’ and running away is actually very effective.   Not only will you draw attention to yourself and your situation and scare the thief away, but you will probably have a few laughs about it later.  And of course, report the situation to the Cancun Police immediately.

Traveling in Cancun is usually very safe and very visitor friendly, but just like everywhere else in the world, there are those that aren’t as honest.   So enjoy your Cancun vacation, but be vigilant.   Read Cancun Safety Tips Part 1 and 2 for more information on how to hold onto your cash in Cancun!
