Sometimes, traveling with a new baby or toddler can be quite a hassle, but having the right gear can really help you and baby have a great Cancun vacation! First thing you should consider is the weather. What time of year will you be visiting Cancun? During the summer, Cancun is very hot and humid. From about March though November, Cancun is about 95 degrees Fahrenheit and about 80% humidity. During the winter months however, it is considerably cooler. At an average of only 80 degrees and 50% humidity, winter is a much easier time to travel to Cancun for both you and your baby.
Now having thought about when you will be visiting, lets talk about the gear! While in Cancun, you will be walking quite a bit. So you will need a way to take baby with you! In most cases you have two options: stroller or some sort of pack. Strollers can be an excellent choice, but they aren’t very practical for use in Cancun. While you are in Cancun you will probably be getting onto buses and into taxis and crossing the streets and with a stroller this can be very cumbersome. A pack of some sort is probably the best way to go, but you need to remember when you are coming to Cancun when you buy a pack. Something like a Bjorn pack would be great for winter Cancun vacations and perfect for almost any child not old enough to walk. A sling is probably a better choice if you are planning to travel to Cancun during the warmer months. Slings come in many fabrics and choices. Chose a light, mesh-like fabric that will be sure to keep both you and baby cool.
As you know, new baby’s skin is very sensitive and sometimes sunscreen isn’t the best answer for sun protection when you are on the beach. Try a pop-up tent from Phil&Teds. They are very light weight and portable and they are made of a very cool mesh that allows wind to pass easily to keep baby cool. They fold small to store and carry, but they can be excellent protection from the sun and mosquitoes. Mosquito born illnesses are almost non-existent here in Cancun, but mosquito bites are very irritating. A pop-up tent can save your baby from a lot of irritation and save you a lot of frustration as well.
For sleeping, most hotels in Cancun’s famous hotel zone have beds large enough to co-bed, but if you would rather have some time alone during the night, you can try a travel hammock like the one in the picture. The travel hammock is a very light weight and portable option. It will keep baby cool during the night and it is familiar. Sleeping in a regular place every night is best for most children and the hammock design is difficult to roll out of. I wouldn’t recommend this for older children that move a lot, but for infants, it is perfect.
Cancun is a very family friendly city and everywhere you go you will find accommodations for you and your child, but it is always best to be prepared! Find out what you think will be best and most comfortable for you and your baby and you will surely have a great Cancun vacation!
